Big Ron Chisato wins big
Ron Chisato emerged from a mammoth field to win Top Pool Bar’s 8-Ball Amateur Tournament last July 29 at the Garapan sports bar.
The sweet-shooting Chisato bested 31 other up-and-coming pool players, winning five successive matches before capping the evening with the championship after beating Gary Chisato.
Big Ron started the ball rolling, so to speak, with a win over Andrew Pangelinan, and then moved on with consecutive victories over Kevin Aldan and Marie Vista.
Ranged against Simon Pae in the winners’ bracket finals, Big Ron again made all the big plays to reach the semis, where he went up against Gary.
The Chisato-Chisato match-up went in favor of Big Ron, which allowed him to sit back and relax, while Gary played Michael Benavente in the losers’ bracket finals.
Gary gave himself another shot at his kin and the two squared off in the championship. The challenger came out smoking, but Big Ron didn’t pull his punches either in a classic finale that wound up with the latter taking home the $50 purse and weekly first place trophy.
The Friday before the 29th, Joshua Gibson bagged the championship after outplaying Joey Tudela in the finals. Like Big Ron, Gibson also emerged from a deep pool of 32 of the island’s most promising cue artists.
Pool Bar manager Zheng Jian Zheng congratulated Big Ron and Gibson for topping the past two weeks’ poolfests and invited anew beginners to participate in this coming Friday’s resumption of the amateur 8-ball event.
The 8-ball pool competition is open only to players 18 years old and above and participation is free.
