Garapan beats San Antonio, claims Rotary lead
Garapan Rollers I reasserted its dominance over basically the same team it defeated two years ago in the championship of the Island-Wide Village Youth Basketball League.
After yielding the 14-and-under crown to the players of Ray Duenas earlier in the year, payback was in the air at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium Wednesday in the lone game of the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League.
With playmaker Joemar Tumaquip, acrobatic Jerry Cruz, and Pete “Slash” Iguel having their way in the first 20 minutes of action, the Garapan cagers were able to lord it over their northern counterparts and took a 44-38 spread at the half.
Tumaquip led coach Joe Diaz’s team with nine points, while Iguel and Cruz added eight and seven points, respectively.
San Antonio tried to rally back in the game come the second canto, but were time and time against frustrated by Garapan’s discipline with the ball and sleek motion offense.
It came to a point that San Antonio players, instead of venting their anger on themselves, tried to take it out on Garapan’s players, and this led to the referees calling a warning on one of the ex-69ers.
While the collars of the San Antonio players were searing red, the hands of Iguel, Cruz, and Keoni Chariton heated up, as the trio combined for 28 second-half points to help Garapan complete their domination of their rivals.
Iguel paced Garapan in scoring with 20 markers, while Cruz, Tumaquip, and Chariton wound up with 14 points to better the victors.
Josh Sablan was unstoppable in the first half, but only scored two in the second, and wound up with a game-high 25 points. He, however, failed to get adequate support from his teammates as only Preston Basa (13 points) and Bill Babauta (11) chipped in double-figure scores.
The win pushed G-Rollers atop the standings with a 3-0 mark, while the loss dropped San Antonio to 3-1.
