Legends too much for D’Fixers
Legends gave Diamond Fixers a polishing it wouldn’t forget in the weekend’s last Masters Basketball League match over at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium Saturday.
After a lackluster start that had them leading by just solitary point after the opening quarter, Legends started to flex their muscles in the second quarter onwards to rout their opponents 98-77 in the 35-and-over division of the cagefest.
Former national player Ray Lizama and newcomer Claude Calvo led Legends’ resurgence firing nine and six points, respectively, in the second half to give their team a comfortable 40-24 spread at the half.
Lizama was not finished though and continued his hot shooting in the third, scoring 14 of Legends’ 29-point output to almost single-handedly give his team a 69-50 advantage going into the fourth and final quarter.
It was all over but the shouting in the fourth, as Legends and Diamond Fixers unloaded their benches in the final 10 minutes of garbage time.
Lizama topscored for Legends with 33 points, while streaky guard Johnny Badilles and Calvo backed him up with 20 and 14 points, respectively.
Masters rookie Bogs Dayrit led Diamond Fixers’ losing cause with 20, while high-flying Martin Moreno came away with 13 points.
The MBL resumes this Friday with Legends II taking on Heinz & David Proa in the 6:30pm opener in the 45-and-over division, while the Proas’ 35-and-over team takes on Diamond Fixers in the 8pm nightcap.
