The Public School System Food and Nutrition office is reminding parents and guardians of students on the application period for its breakfast and lunch meal program for school year 2005-2006.

Acting FNS director Greg Sablan said the school breakfast and lunch meal program has been providing healthy and nutritious meals with all the food components to make a complete meal.

In their announcement, a nominal meal charge of $0.50 for breakfast and $0.75 for lunch meals will be charged at schools participating in the School Meal Program.

“This is a reduced price made available through federal grants,” said Sablan.

He said children from families that are below or that meet federal guidelines are eligible for one free breakfast and one free lunch everyday at the school they are enrolled in.

A household made up of two children and two adults are considered a household of four and thus will not have to pay meals if their combined monthly income is $2,097 or less.

The FNS announcement noted that applications for free meals are available at the schools and the FNS office located at the 3rd floor, Retirement Building. The application forms are also available in Tinian Elementary School and Rota Elementary School.

Parents should fill out application forms, provide supporting documents and return it to the school where their child attends if they think they qualify and wish for their children to receive free meals.

Sablan said applications would not be approved unless all application forms are completed, together with all supporting documents. He said all applications must be submitted every school year regardless if their children had received free meals in the previous years.

“Children who received free meals last year have 30 working days from the first day of school to submit applications and are eligible for free meals during this 30-day grace period,” the announcement further read.

Families who are currently receiving assistance from the Nutrition Assistance Program would qualify for the meal program, but would still need to complete an application. Completed application forms would be processed in two-weeks.
