Store loses $250K to burglars
Some $250,000 in cash was stolen from a Chalan Laulau store—this year’s biggest heist so far among a string of burglary and theft cases that have hit the island in the last few weeks.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David said employees of the Hailan Market, located on Middle Road across the TransAmerica hardware, discovered the cash missing from the store’s safe Tuesday morning, the day after the Liberation Day holiday celebrations.
David said the store is equipped with security cameras, but the equipment’s wires have been cut. He said the cameras’ recording showed that they were working until 11:20pm Monday. The recording reportedly did not show any suspects.
The Thief Apprehension Select Coalition has taken over the case for further investigation. No suspect has been identified yet.
David said Wang Fen Fu, store control clerk, discovered the cash missing from the safe during the early office hours of Tuesday. Wang had gone inside his office to validate cash collections when he noticed that the money he had placed inside the safe Monday night was missing.
Wang then informed the store’s assistant manager, a certain Ms. Yin, about the loss. Yin immediately checked the store’s surveillance cameras and noticed that the wires connecting them to the equipment had been nipped off.
Police said Yin estimated the amount of stolen money at $250,000, representing the store’s cash collections for the past three days.
