Education officials meet in Honolulu
A ranking U.S. Department of Education official recently facilitated a team of staff and consultants in a June meeting in Honolulu with teams of people from the three Pacific territories.
The meetings with Dr. Jeanette Lim, Education Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for Management and Planning, focused on three areas that are emphasized in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 legislation: standards, assessment and accountability; English language learners; and highly qualified teachers.
All three areas are concerns shared throughout the region. The three teams created draft plans to improve student learning in their schools.
This event is the latest in a series of meetings that PREL has helped facilitate between the department and the Pacific territories.
In the context of the No Child Left Behind Act, the Education Department is increasingly working with education staff directly at the state level. This approach is emphasized in the new Comprehensive Center grants, which are up for renewal this summer.
PREL is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that serves the educational community in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands, the continental United States, and countries throughout the world.
