Grill master to be crowned at Liberation Fest
Mouth-watering servings straight out of the grill will be the highlight of Sunday’s Liberation Fest celebration as 10 teams battle it out in the first-ever King of the Grill competition at the Garapan Fishing Base.
The event, hosted by MARPAC and co-sponsored by Joeten, kicks off at 5pm with the king expected to be crowned by 9pm.
MARPAC marketing manager Jojo Camacho said each team is limited to five members—one chef and four assistants—and is not open to professional chefs.
“This is open to the community and we’re expecting a big community involvement,” Camacho said Wednesday. “Everybody barbecues, and we’re looking for people to come out and show their stuff and their technique.”
Teams were required to pay an entrance fee of $50 and will receive T-shirts for each member, a barbecue pit, and chicken and ribs provided by Joeten.
“The teams keep the pits,” Camacho said.
Each team must submit one chicken and one rib entry for the five judges. Judging will be based on texture, taste, and appearance.
“All they need to bring is their charcoal or wood…but they can’t use gas,” Camacho said.
Cooking begins at 5pm and must be completed by 7:30pm.
Camacho also explained that teams may share servings with the public but they are restricted from selling the items.
Scores for both entries will be combined and the team with the most points will receive $1,000, a trophy, and a year’s worth of bragging rights and recognition as the King of the Grill.
The second place winner receives $500 and a trophy while third place goes home with $250 and a trophy.
“However, all teams will not walk home empty-handed,” Camacho said.
Registration for the competition is already closed but spectators can still be a big part of the event, whether it be cheering and supporting the 10 teams or joining many others in the nerve-wrecking wait for the drawing of the $500 prize. Other prizes include $100 shopping sprees and Budweiser prize packages, among others.
“Show up in your King of the Grill bonus T-shirt and you can register to win the prizes,” Camacho said.
T-shirts are given free by retail outlets when purchasing a case of MARPAC products, such as Budweiser and Bud Light.
Drawings will be held between 5pm and 9pm.
