All set for Rotary opening
The much-anticipated start of the 2005 Saipan Rotary Summer Youth Basketball League is all set after team representatives and league officials met yesterday afternoon at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The league is scheduled to tip off on July 7, kicking off with an opening ceremony at 5pm.
After drawing lots, San Antonio Sixers I and Ol’Aces set up an early showdown to open the curtains for the 2005 season when both powerhouse teams square off beginning at 6pm.
Other teams include Sixers II, San Antonio, Hoops, Breeze, Garapan Rollers I, II, and III, Matansa Sparks, Bwibwis, Saints, Junior Nationals, and the Southern Sonics.
All players listed on the team roster must not turn 19 years old before Sept. 30, 2005.
The league expected about 18 teams, however, several teams dropped out.
With the field now featuring 14 teams, league officials have decided not to set up pool play. Also, the regular season will feature a one-round elimination process in which teams will face each other once before the top squads head into the playoffs.
Games will be played Monday to Thursday, featuring two 20-minute halves. Each team is allowed two time outs in the first half and three in the second half. Officials also stressed that unused timeouts from the first half will not carry over to the second half.
Officials also reiterated the importance of coaches to attend a coaching clinic held every Saturday at the Ada Gym from 9am to 12pm.
Officials are also giving teams up to July 6 to submit the $100 entrance fee, age verification documents, and waiver forms. Teams who fail to pay the entrance fee will not be allowed to play.
Last year, guard Paul Macgalas and his Makos teammates pulled an upset of pennant champ and erstwhile undefeated San Antonio Sixers in the finals.
