Rey Ferraz and Tom Aguon overcame the heat of the scorching sun and a tough field in the A and B Flights to win the FilTaga Golfers Association May Ace of the Month Tournament held last Sunday at the Laulau Golf Resort west course.

Ferraz finished third behind Sen. Pete Reyes (net 66) and Mando Guban (73) in A Flight. But since the two golfers already won FilTaga tournaments this year—Reyes in January and Guban in March—the former president of the golf association was awarded the championship for May.

Ferraz actually figured in a four-way tie with Sasaki Oliver, Wilhelm Maui, and Ted Malaran, as all four carded identical net scores of two-over 74.

FilTaga broke the logjam when it deducted the back nine gross scores of the players with half of their handicaps.

Ferraz edged Maui and Malaran by the skin of his teeth with his 36. Ferraz totaled a 44 in the back nine and minus half of his 16 handicap, he wound up with even par.

Malaran and Maui garnered 36.6 with Malaran deducting 7.5 from his 44 and Maui 6.5 from his 43. Oliver settled for a 38 when his 39 was cut to 38 because of his two handicap.

The rest of the golfers in A Flight, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Jess Yumul (75); Joe Miranda (79); Edgar Abalos (81); Ralph Yumul (84); and William Retardo (85).

Aguon, for his part, finished a mere stroke behind April Ace Glenna Palacios to win B Flight. Palacios had a net score of 68 and Aguon a 69.

Fred Cataluna came in third with his 71, followed by Father Manny Corcuera and Ed “Puy” Macario with net scores of 72 and 73, respectively.

The rest of the golfers in B Flight, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Harry Kang (74); Jhun Calma (76); Greg De Torres (76); Jun Dela Cruz (78); Ceasar Dumatol (79); Manny Po (80); Larry Guerrero (104); and Tony Guerrero (95 gross-new member).

FilTaga president Malaran said the afternoon game was so hot and humid that the association’s water jugs had to be constantly refilled to satisfy the members’ parched throats.

Established in 1993, FilTaga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.

A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
