Garapan eyed to have parking meters soon
Coral Tree Avenue on Garapan may very well soon be called Parking Meter Avenue if a plan by the Department of Public Works pushes through.
DPW project coordinator William Wanket said they are looking at the possibility of installing parking meters along Coral Tree Avenue six months from now.
While the installation of parking meters along Coral Tree Avenue is still up in the air, Wanket said DPW has already given the go-signal to close the roadway to two-way traffic from Orchid Street to Micro Beach Road.
He said the implementation of one-way traffic flow along Coral Tree Avenue, along with other changes, would take effect at 8pm on May 21. Other changes along the roadway include the following:
* Parallel parking will be on marked areas only and will be allowed along the west curbside of the street. Parked vehicles in the marked parallel spaces must be headed in the direction of the traffic;
* Loading and unloading will only be allowed for five minute along the east curbside in designated turnout areas;
* Vehicles leaving Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach and Hyatt Regency Saipan are only allowed to turn right, as there will be no left turn signs on all intersecting streets along Coral Tree Avenue; and
* The speed limit will be 15mph. The new rule will not allow stopping, standing or parking in the free travel lane. “One-Way” arrow signs and pavement markings will be installed.
Based on the DPW’s plan, the changes will include a three-way stop intersection at Micro Beach Road to Beach Road and all other roads in the Garapan Special District will remain two-way streets, with the centerline painted yellow but with new street name signs.
Wanket is advising all motorists to take note of the changes to avoid penalty as soon as these changes are implemented.
