Organizers of the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League disclosed that nine teams have already shown interest in competing for this year’s championship.

An organizational meeting for the 18-and-under league was held yesterday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, giving organizers an idea on how many team might see action.

Confirmed teams who had representatives at the meeting were the San Antonio Sixers I and II headed by coach Ryan Nisperos, San Antonio 69ers headed by coach Ray Duenas, Garapan Rollers I and II led by coach Joe Diaz, Tanapag Warriors, and the Ol’Aces. Other teams who showed interest were the Matansa Sparks I and II.

The next meeting is set for Memorial Day, May 30, 10am at the Ada Gym conference room.

Organizers are encouraging all interested teams to have a representative at the meeting as the league is tentatively set to kick off on June 20.

According to organizers, all team must be ready with uniforms for the opening ceremony on the first play date.

Players turning 19 years of age before Oct. 30 are not eligible to see action, and all coaches must submit documents required for proof of age before the start of the season.

Team rosters will also be limited to just 15 players. All team rosters must be final before the team’s first game. All players must also submit waiver forms before their first game.

Home teams shall occupy the north bench and visiting teams the south bench.

“Only players and coaches listed on the team rosters will be allowed on the team designated bench area,” organizers said in a statement. “All others should be seated at the spectator’s area.”

Organizers also stressed the need for all teams to adhere to the rules of the Ada Gym and that FIBA international rules will also be applied.

“Any concerns or protests not covered in the ground rules will be dealt with in accordance to the FIBA rulebook,” organizers said.

An entrance fee of $100 is also required and must be made payable to the Division of Sports and Recreation by June 10.

Makos hoisted the championship crown last year, defeating the San Antonio Sixers I in a winner-take-all finale.
