The Northern Marianas College’s Beta Lambda Psi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society has launched the first ever “on campus”’ NMC scholarship, developed by the students and for the students of NMC.

The honor society said this “self-perpetuating” scholarship fund is designed to promote and recognize academic excellence, leadership development, and community service among PTK honor society members.

One dollar of every $10 contributed to the scholarship fund will be immediately awarded during the upcoming fall semester; the remaining money will form a base upon which to build for the long term.

Various donor levels are available and all donors will receive recognition at PTK’s first and subsequent ceremonies awarding scholarships to deserving recipients. Donations to the PTK scholarship fund qualify as Educational Tax Credits.

Sen. Thomas P. Villagomez helped kick off the scholarship fund drive with a generous $500 contribution. In addition to the donation from Villagomez, the chapter earned approximately $500 from its NMC Charter Day game booth fundraiser.

The PTK Scholarship Committee consists of co-chair Tatiana A. Babauta, co-chair Leslie K. Cabrera, co-chair Zack Berger, Brenda Cabrera (chapter president), Alisa Pangelinan (chapter vice president), Rochelle Ann Roberto (chapter treasurer), Nicole Babauta (chapter recording secretary), and members Randy Mendoza, Kasandra B. Santos, Kuan Yuan, Isa Arriola, Victoria Taitague, Theresa Taylor, Adrianne Stump, Joanna Sabangan, Leslie Cabrera, Zack Berger, Rofelina Borja, and Lucy Lu.

Founded in 1918, PTK has become the largest and most prestigious honor society recognizing academic excellence in two-year colleges around the world. The organization’s membership continually seeks new service opportunities that will benefit current and future PTK members in their quest for academic excellence at NMC and beyond. In this way, PTK members have the opportunity to repay NMC and the CNMI for their education, and also contribute to a brighter future for the entire Commonwealth.
