The Saipan Agricultural Fair Association donated produce to the Office on Aging at the Man’amko Center yesterday.

The vegetables donated include bitter gourd, okra, eggplant, tomatoes, string beans, and others.

SAFA president and director of the Division of Agriculture Donald Flores, who led the donation, said the event is in line with the 26th Saipan Agricultural Fair this May 28 at the 4-H Building in Susupe, Civic Center Beach across Marianas High School.

He said the donation was in coordination with farmer members who make it a point each year to help shoulder the expenses of meals for the community’s elderly.

More than five baskets of vegetables were delivered to the center’s multi-purpose center. The donation is one of many activities farmers on island are doing this month to celebrate Mes Lancheros, or Farmers Month.

Aging director Joseph Palacios said the farm products would greatly help his office in feeding the members and clients of his office.

In his speech yesterday morning at the Man’amko Center, he asked the man’amko on how they would want the donated vegetables to be divided. The man’amko voted that the vegetables should stay at the center for their meals.

Palacios said the donation was good for the office because at least for a few meals they would not have to buy food and save money for the next meals of the elderly.

Flores said the event also coincided with the Office on Aging’s Older Americans Month, which is held to honor the man’amko’s contribution to the community.
