Twenty-two golfers took the Lao Lao Bay Golf Resort east course by storm Sunday morning in hopes of capturing the Saipan Golfers Association’s May Ace title, but after all drives, putts, and golf cart maneuverings, Jess Castro emerged from the pack and reigned supreme en route to taking home the top prize.

With his impressive performance, Castro secured a slot in the SGA year-end tournament, which is open to all monthly ace winners of the year.

Despite the torching sun, Castro was cool as a cucumber, as he gently worked his touch for a magnificent 39 in the front nine. He slowed down a bit in the back nine, notching a 40 for a tournament-best gross score of 79.

His score was then lowered courtesy of a 10 handicap, resulting in a net score of 69, just enough to edge runner-up Ed Manglona, who finished his day with a net score of 70.

Manglona got better as the day went on, opening with a 41 on the front nine before finishing the second half of the tournament with a 40. His gross score of 81 was then reduced to just one shot shy of Castro’s courtesy of his 11 handicap.

Finishing a close third was Joe Guerrero, who posted scores of 46 in both the front and back nine for a 92 gross. He then had his 21-handicap work magic for him, lowering his score to a 71 net.

Dave Cepeda also finished with a net score of 71, working for a gross of 88 and posting a 17 handicap, while Mario Fajardo had the fifth-best finish with net score of 72. Fajardo posted a 49 in the front nine before closing with a 46 for a gross of 95. He entered with a 23 handicap.

Meanwhile, Manglona and Rick Kautz showcased their power off the tee, accounting for the longest drives of the day, with Manglona recording his on hole No. 7 and Kautz on hole No. 14.

Target machines posting the closet to pin hits were Fajardo on the 6th and 15th holes, Cepeda on the 11th, and Lui Cepeda on the 4th hole.
