Prius end regular round on high note

After locking the pennant crown for the 2005 BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League on Wednesday, Toyota Prius returned to the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium Friday night and closed their regular season on a high note with an 83-65 victory over the Tanapag Warriors.

Tanapag guard Jimmy Marquez and forward Mike Reyes combined for 14 points in the opening quarter and fueling an early run for the Warriors, but their effort was matched by Prius forwards Jeremy Winkfield and Mel Tagabuel, who helped Toyota take the early advantage with a combined 17 points in the first 10 minutes of action, 23-16.

Prius cooled off in the second stanza and put up just 13 points, but the effort was still enough to pad their lead to 10 points, 36-26.

Toyota kicked back to high gear at the start of the second half and began to widen their lead behind a run-and-gun attack, with Winkfield and center Ambrose Ogumoro highlighting the show with eight points apiece. Prius outscored the opposition, 29-11, for a comfortable 65-37 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Tanapag, however, was far from throwing in the towel and began to fight back in the payoff period. Jordan Suel made good on assists from all around standout Jeremiah Deleon Guerrero and attacked the rim for 12 points in the last 10 minutes as the Warriors began to work their magic.

Tagabuel, however, managed to keep Toyota going strong, muscling his way for another six points before taking a breather.

Winkfield and Tagabuel led Toyota with 21 and 15 points while Ogumoro and speedster Dexter Dillay added 10 points apiece.

Reyes paced the Warriors with 16 points while Suel and point guard Ziddy Johannes finished with 14 points apiece. Deleon Guerrero also had a good showing, pumping in 13 points to go along with several assists and rebounds.
