Saipan’s barbecue experts will heat up the Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival and Beer Garden, as they meet for a cook-off at American Memorial Park tonight.

A maximum of 10 individuals will be competing for bragging rights and cash prizes, amounting to $100, $75, and $50, respectively, for the top three contestants.

The Marianas Visitors Authority will provide all participants meat, charcoal, and a barbecue grill. All the ingredients, mixing bowls, and utensils will be brought by the contestants.

The competition will begin at 6:15pm. Participants will be given an hour and a half to marinate, cook, and prepare their barbecue for tasting.

The entries will be judged based on taste, originality, presentation, and cooking time.

The Taste of the Marianas is now in its seventh year, having been started as part of the Visit the Marianas campaign in 1999.

There are four hotels and 11 other vendors participating in this year’s event. The hotels are Pacific Islands Club Saipan, Saipan World Resort, Hyatt Regency Saipan, and Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach.

The other participants are Capricciosa and Tony Roma’s, Herman’s Modern Bakery, Poon’s Restaurant, Thai House Restaurant, Champ’s, Ty & Tia, D’Elegance, Hula Girl, Hamilton’s Restaurant, MarPac, and Pacific Trading Company. (Agnes E. Donato)
