3rd outage hits Garapan
Garapan was hit by a power outage for the third straight day yesterday, this time as a result of an emergency pole replacement that the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. needed to do.
This came as CUC advised Tanapag residents to expect yet another power outage this afternoon.
According to CUC, the scheduled blackout will affect all customers residing near the church and beach area in Tanapag towards Lifoifoi residence.
The utility firm has to turn the power off on a lateral of Feeder 7 to ensure the safety of personnel who will be replace two existing primary power poles that are infested with termites.
Yesterday’s power outage lasted from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, affecting customers within the vicinity of Kristo Rai Church along Beach Road, down to a little south of the traffic light at the Microl intersection in San Jose.
CUC explained that CUC had to replace a power pole, which was damaged when a recently transplanted tree near the Carolinian Utt fell on a power line.
Power service has been on and off in Garapan and other Saipan villages since the week started.
On Monday, a power outage struck Garapan after the Puerto Rico power plant ran out of fuel due to delayed delivery.
Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Inc. said the outage was not caused by Mobil’s failure to deliver, but by the plant personnel‘s refusal to accept the balance of the product scheduled for delivery on Saturday evening.
But CUC maintained yesterday that the delivery did not take place until Tuesday morning because Mobil did not have enough fuel in its storage on Saipan.
On Monday midnight, the entire island experienced a major blackout after a CUC employee mistakenly switched off a service station, rather than one generator, while conducting regular maintenance at the Lower Base power plant.
