Upward Bound students to attend Leeward summer college program
Angelica Co, a sophomore at Marianas High School, and Jalma Manglona, a junior at Rota High School, will attend the 2005 Leeward Community College Classic Math and Science Summer Program from June 9, 2005 to July 24, 2005.
The purpose of the program is to motivate and excite students to consider careers in fields requiring math or science, to increase academic skills, to prepare students for college programs, and provide guidance for academic, career, and personal needs.
Generally, it is a summer, residential, pre-college program offering coursework in math (Algebra through Calculus), English, literature, composition, Spanish, Japanese, Hawaiian, biotechnology, forensics chemistry, marine biology, physics and college/career guidance.
Leeward Community College designed their summer program accordingly to specific grade level. As juniors, Co and Manglona will enroll in science courses such as forensics science or biotechnology.
Co is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ireneo Co of Dandan. When asked about her feelings on going to Hawaii, she said, “It will be an educational trip which I will enjoy since I’ve traveled before to Hawaii for other purposes. I hope to learn new things in improving myself and enhancing my college life skills.”
Currently, Co is an active member of her high school National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America.
Co wants to pursue a career in Medicine. “This subject interest me and will like to pursue it as a career. I hope to work in a hospital and apply my skills as a podiatrist or an internist.”
Getting good grades in her high school studies is a priority for success in life, but Angelica still finds time to talk to her friends via phone or e-mail, watch TV/movie, and hang out with her friends and family.
Manglona is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Manglona of Rota. She was born on Saipan, but her family moved and lived on Rota. She has three sisters and a brother. Her hobbies include playing sports, reading books, and cooking.
When asked about being selected to attend this year’s Leeward Community College Classic Math and Science Summer Program, she replied, “I was surprised.”
When asked about her expectations from this summer program, she said, “I expect to become better prepared for the real challenges I will be facing as an independent person, most especially college life, lifetime decision-making issues, and commitment. I’m looking forward to learning new things, meeting new people and establishing friendships with diverse group of people from different islands and cultural background.”
Manglona plans to attend college and pursue a career in education or law. “I want to become the best educator or lawyer because when I was younger I would take care of my brothers and sisters which I find myself arguing and consulting.”
Jalma’s role model is her cousin, Aubry, from whom she gets inspiration since her cousin graduated early from high school and achieved academically. “She prevailed against many odds and faced many challenges in her life.”
Co and Manglona are participants of the Northern Marianas College Upward Bound Program, a federal TRIO program tasked with the responsibility to prepare and motivate qualified high school students for postsecondary education.
