The CNMI Water Task Force and the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. recently completed the development of nine new production wells in Obyan, and has briefed officials of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about progress of the project.

Most of the well-head materials and pumps for these wells are on island, said the task force. Materials for the transmission water line are expected to arrive on island by May 17, 2005.

The task force said AIC has been awarded the contract to install the waterline.

According to the task force, part of the fiscal year 2005 U.S. Congress special appropriations grant for CNMI water projects will be used to purchase materials and services to get these wells energized and connected to the existing system by August of this year.

Since the Obyan project impacts historical landmarks, the task force is presently working with officials of the Historic Preservation Office to address regulatory requirements.

Once the process is complete, the Notice to Proceed will be issued to AIC for construction.

According to the task force, these nine wells will increase Saipan’s water supply by 500,000 gallons per day, approximately a 6-percent increase in groundwater production for CUC. (PR)
