Escape from Managaha returns

Rota, Tinian, and Saipan each have events that test the mettle of highly tuned athletes by taking them to the mental and physical limits through road and sea, but in two weeks the swimmers from across the region will descend upon the smallest island in the CNMI to see if they can conquer its challenge in the 3rd Annual Escape From Managaha.
For the third year in a row, the Marianas Visitors Authority, OSB8, NMDOA, DPS, PDI, TASI, Saipan Swim Club, and Seawind Marin Sports are challenging the swimmers to fight the waves and currents through the three kilometers between the tranquil drop of sand and Saipan on Saturday, May 21.
This swim is not for the faint of freestyle, as prospective escapees must possess the ability to finish one mile in 40 minutes or less, and the distance of the Escape is just under two miles overall. This year’s course is a bit different from the previous two, as the finish will be upon the sand of Micro Beach instead of the Hafa Adai Beach Hotel, and organizers believe that this year will be the first that feat will be “officially” completed.
Registration is from 4pm to 6pm at the KFC desk in Hafa Adai Beach Hotel on Friday, May 20, followed by a pre-race briefing for all participants at 6pm. Participants are urged to complete their application and submit it along with their registration fee as soon as possible.
The cost to enter the event was $60 for the early-birds that submitted their entry forms before last Saturday, May 7, and is $90 for everyone else. For the participants less than 18-years-old, the early-bird cost was $50, and has jumped to $75.
Aside from getting the chance to cross the channel during the only time it closes all year, the entry fee includes a commemorative T- shirt, an awards party, the pre-race ferry fee, and what organizers term as “and a guaranteed great time!”
