“Thank God it’s Friday” was more than just an expression this week as guests and participating individuals converged at the AJ’s Restaurant on Friday for the annual Cinco de Mayo Chill-Cook Off.

AJ’s Restaurant sponsored the event, which drew more than 20 participants who pitted talents in preparing Mexican dishes. The event started at 6pm with more than 20 entries that were whittled down to the top 10 by the discriminating taste buds of the panel of judges.

Top four winners were: 4th placer Samson Tan with his Chili con Sam; third placer John Jones with his Boot Leather Chili, and 2nd placer Gary Weakly with his Chili con Gary. Beating all chili recipes was Fe Davis with her very own Okie Chili. Other finalists were Lito Mu-toc, Juan Cuellar, Delfin Elfalan, Hutton/Lynch, Grace Brostrom and Laurie Allen.

Winners took home $500, $250, $150 and a mini-fridge.

Davis, who seemed speechless when her name was called out as the top winner, attributed her success to the cilantro. (Marconi Calindas)
