Endings and beginnings
The past several days in sports were all about endings and beginnings.
The Saipan Tennis Association wrapped up its three-week 2nd Annual Toyota Tennis Tournament last April 30 with a sumptuous awards banquet at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.
The biggest winners to come out of the netfest were former collegiate player Peter Loyola, the Motto family, and the Jones family taking home multiple trophies each.
The two-day 2nd Annual Hoops for Life 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament also had its closure on Sunday with the Bus Drivers of brothers Tony and Ed Diaz, Donald Blondin, and Mark Wallace rolling to the championship.
The time trials for this weekend’s McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championship also ended Wednesday with the who’s who of the local athletics scene advancing to the finals.
In basketball, the 2005 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League is down to its Final Four. The semis, which starts Monday, pits pennant champions 69ers against Sixers I in a battle of inter-village rivals and Garapan Rollers against Tanapag Warriors.
Action in the BANMI 25-and-under Baskeball League and Mobil Oil Marianas Co-ed Invitational Basketball League also continued last week.
After several months in the backburner, beach volleyball returned to the sand courts behind the Pacific Islands Club with 10 teams, along with their unique and creative names, set to duke it out for the next several weeks in the 6th Annual Coors Light Four-Person Beach Volleyball League.
Last week also saw softball—of the fast pitch and slow pitch varieties—as well as baseball—of the Little League and Saipan Major League varieties—played at either the Tan Ge and Tan Ko ballparks in Oleai.
