The topping off ceremony of Department of Public Health’s new facility yesterday attracted a number of people, among them was freelance photojournalist Charles Pertwee.

Pertwee is on island accompanying New York Times Northeast Asia correspondent James Brooke, who is reportedly on Saipan to follow up stories regarding the island’s delegate bill, the status of the garment industry, and the highly controversial story about the relationship between U.S. House leader Rep. Tom Delay and controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff, whom the CNMI government hired years back.

The 34-year-old Pertwee said he chose the profession of photography because he likes telling stories through photographs. He said he has been working with the New York Times as freelance photographer for six months now.

This is Pertwee’s second time in the CNMI. He also visited the islands back in March when Brooke first wrote the story about the Commonwealth’s tourist and garment industries.

Pertwee said he views his life as a great adventure and he takes and grabs his longtime companions—his cameras—with him to take pictures of people, places and events. “It’s an awesome job and the only job I can do,” he said. “Being a photojournalist is the most satisfying [job] for me.”

Pertwee said he finds Saipan a great place to unwind and relax. He said he hopes to come back again to see more of the island since the last two times he visited were purely for work.

He said he and Brooke will leave the island today and head back to Tokyo for more work. Pertwee is inviting every one to view his collections at www.pertwee.com.
