1.5 cent surcharge to appear on CUC bills
Utility bills sent out this month will include the 1.5-cent per kilowatt hour fuel surcharge, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. announced yesterday.
CUC executive director Lorraine Babauta said the fuel surcharge will apply to all utility services after Feb. 28, when the surcharge regulation became effective.
CUC has carefully scrutinized all billings to ensure that the fuel surcharge is properly applied, Babauta said. “Some customers will notice that they are given a credit adjustment for usage for any time prior to the Feb. 28 effective date. If customers carefully examine their bills they will see that the fuel surcharge is stated in one line and any adjustments for usage prior to the effective date of the surcharge is stated on a separate line in the bill.”
According to Babauta, the application of the surcharge began with the first billing cycle and will be applied to each subsequent billing cycle in April.
Next month the fuel surcharge will be increased to 3.5 cents per kwh for all customers. The surcharge is expected to remain on that level for the rest of the calendar year.
Babauta also urged customers with questions about their billing to contact the CUC customer service office on the 1st floor of the Joeten Dandan Building.
The fuel surcharge regulation was adopted in February to pass through to all CUC consumers increases in fuel costs for the production of electricity.
Under the regulation, CUC may impose a fuel surcharge of up to 3.5 cents per kwh during the calendar year in which the regulation becomes effective.
For subsequent years, however, CUC may increase the surcharge rate by up to 2 cents per kwh for consumers using less than 2,001 kwh per month.
For consumers using more than 2000 kwh per month, the increase rate is unlimited.
Revenues generated from the fuel surcharge may be used for the purpose of fuel payments only, not for CUC’s operations.
