No IVYBL yesterday, teams need to settle fee
Last night’s Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League bout between sister teams San Antonio Sixers I and II was postponed and rescheduled to a later date after league officials disclosed that both teams have yet to settle their entrance fee.
Division of Sports and Recreation staff Joe Mettao said both the Sixers I and II need to settle their $100 entrance fee before they are to be allowed to take the court again.
The Sixers I are currently tied for second in the team standings with a 3-1 win-loss record, while the Sixers II sit with a 0-5 card.
Meanwhile, defending champion Garapan Rollers notched their third win of the season Tuesday night, dominating all facets of the game against Hopwood Junior High School en route to a 50-26 victory at the Koblerville Basketball Court.
The team allowed just three players from HJHS to score the entire match.
Determined to pull above the .500 mark in the 14-and-under league, the G-Rollers played tough defense from the opening tip off and limited their opponents to just two points for a 7-2 cushion after the first eight minutes of play.
The Garapan squad guided by coach Joe Diaz continued to torment the opposition, this time putting more effort on the offensive end to boost their advantage. Nate Mateo went off for six points, sparking a 17-8 run in the second period that enabled the G-Rollers to extend their lead to a comfortable 14 points at the break, 24-10.
For his part, Tony Rogolifoi Jr. tried to bring life to his team, accounting for six of the team’s eight points in the quarter.
After a brief break, action resumed and so did the dominance of the G-Rollers. The team continued to put up better numbers while HJHS struggled. With his team firing away at will, Diaz has his team heading into the final stanza of regulation up by almost 20 points, 37-16.
Despite being down by a bunch, HJHS refused to throw in the towel and put up their best tally of the game in the fourth quarter. Their effort, however, was not close to brining them back into contention as the buzzer sounded with them still down by a huge margin.
Don Teregeyo and Mateo led the G-Rollers with 13 and eight points, while Rogolifoi finished with a game-high 14 points to pace HJHS.
G-Rollers 50—Teregeyo 13, N. Mateo 8, Castro 8, Cruz 6, Basilla 5, D. Mateo 5, Tellei 4, Joab 2, Untalan 2, Lebria 2.
HJHS 26—Rogolifoi 14, Reyes 8, Esteves 4.
Scoring by quarters: 7-2, 24-10, 37-16, 13-10.
