Comets (Hale) bop Braves, 15-2
A cluster of Comets did the hitting and J.P. Sablan handled the pitching by going the distance to lift the all-galaxy team to their first win of the season over the previously undefeated Braves in a one-sided Big League contest Tuesday night at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field in Oleai.
Sablan kept the Braves in check by fanning 10 batters and spreading out eight hits through six innings of work atop the hill. The big pitcher handled his business on both sides of the plate as well, as Sablan hit 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base while single handedly driving in more runs than the Braves with four ribbies.
The young man charged with literally being the “go-to guy” for Sablan did all he could to help the ace, as catcher Pat Alepuyo led the hit parade for the Comets by hitting 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a single, a run scored, and five runs batted in.
Third baseman Gary Cruz added to the barrage on Braves pitchers with a stellar 3-for-4 outing with three base knocks, four scores, and an RBI, while teammate B.J. Nicholas went 1-for-2 with a single, three runs scored, a stolen base, and two walks.
Late addition Tom Guerrero made a contribution to the Comets’ cause when he rounded the bases on a two-run inside the park homerun in the top of the sixth for the game’s final score.
After streaking out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Sablan was able to pitch a relaxed game. His ease on the mound multiplied when his boys lumped on five runs in the top of the second off of two his and five walks to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
Although Jordan Suel and Henry Iguel crossed the plate for the Braves in the bottom of the third inning, the Comets answered with a pair of their own in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 10-2.
Another five-run inning put kibosh on any plan of a Braves rally in the sixth, and Sablan closed the door in the bottom half with a pair “K’s” to make it official.
