Road to be closed for Friday’s Mass Walk
The stretch of Beach Road from Kristo Rai Church to the Quartermaster Road will be closed to traffic to give way to the annual Mass Walk this Friday.
The Council on Physical Fitness and Sports said they have already asked the Department of Public Safety’s traffic division to block the road from 5pm to 7pm for the activity.
The council met yesterday to organize the event and had Gov. Juan N. Babauta and council chair Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela in attendance.
Tudela said participants will converge from Kristo Rai across the Garapan Fishing Base so that walkers could have more parking space.
He said the Mass Walk is something the physical fitness board would like to hold annually for a healthy CNMI.
He said the walk also encourages those who have ailments so they can improve their health, but those who are healthy are also invited for the walk, Tudela said.
Department of Community and Cultural Affairs deputy Secretary Carmen Cabrera-Henry said her department would take care of the participating man’amko, and that, while the man’amko are also welcome to participate, they do not necessarily need to finish the walk.
The walk was originally slated on Saturday, April 9, but they moved it a day earlier to give way to the XTERRA Saipan Championship.
Tudela said he had already sent letters of invitation to schools since last Friday. Flyers will be distributed to the public for awareness and their participation, and Babauta said the council should invite parents and schools to the walk.
The council, which is comprised of members from various government agencies such as Department of Public Health, Saipan Mayor’s Office, DPS, DCCA, Office of the Governor, among others, will hold its final meeting for this year’s Mass Walk on Thursday afternoon at the Governor’s Office executive conference room.
