Champions crowned in local sports scene
The local sports scene was packed with much action the past week, with several leagues, tournaments and events kicking off.
Masayuki Matsumaru raced to his third consecutive victory in the 6th Annual Tinian Turquoise Triathlon on Saturday, completing the 1.5-kilometer ocean swim, 40km bike course, and the 10km run in a time of 2:03:52, besting a field of 31 competitors from Japan, Tinian, Saipan, and Guam.
The tennis courts at the American Memorial Park also featured tough battles as youth netters battled for supremacy in the 2005 Coconut Classic Tennis Tournament. The competition ended Monday afternoon, with champions and runners-up going home with their coconut trophies. Mayuko Arriola topped the women’s open singles while Russell Buenaventura topped the boys’ 18-and-under category.
Meanwhile, Arnel Del Rosario was crowned king and Rizza Hensley queen of the Pepsi February King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament Monday at the Saipan Bowing Center, with Del Rosario knocked down 938 pins in his four-game series, while Hensley downed 693 pins.
SS Ghost Co. was also impressive, winning Sunday’s Speedball 3-Man Paintball Tournament hosted by Rueters Raiders Extreme Paintball.
Cagers finally suited up in the BANMI 25-and-under, 2005 MISA Interscholastic , and 5th Annual Mobil Oil Co-ed Invitational basketball leagues.
Other teams were prepping for the start of the 13th Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Festival, while sailors were putting on the finishing touches before setting sail in the 2005 Laguna Regatta.
Players also pounded away for goals, kees, and xunks in Rocball, while action in the Island Wide Volleyball League continued.
