Son receives father’s medal
The son of Isadore Bernard Cott was recently in town to receive his father’s medal of recognition from the 60th year of Battle of Saipan and Tinian organizer and the Military and Veterans Affairs Office.
Inscribed on the medal that Howard Cott took for safekeeping were the words “Our Grateful Island Remembers”.
The elder Cott is now 84 and lives in Los Angeles. He is a war veteran who was part of the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He served as a lieutenant onboard the USS Suamico, an auxiliary oiler, and also took part in the historic Battle of Iwo Jima.
Howard Cott, who lives in Los Angeles and is also a father to a 2-year-old daughter, said it was a huge honor for him to receive the medal on behalf of his father. He said he is sure that his father will appreciate the gesture greatly.
Howard Cott is employed by the U.S. government accounting office and is on Saipan for work. Jerry Facey, co-chair of the 60th Year of Battle of Saipan and Tinian, contacted and invited him to make a courtesy visit to the Office of the Governor to receive the medal of recognition in his father’s behalf.
Facey said it was an honor to know that the son of a war veteran, who fought for freedom, is here to accept the medal.
Ruth Coleman, deputy executive officer of the Military and Veterans Affairs office, said that Cott is included in the symbolical awarding of the war veterans on March 9, 11am at the American Memorial Park. (Marconi Calindas)
