A mother stabbing her own son, a man hacking his own brother with a machete, and another man beating up his own wife: These allegations cropped up in separate criminal charges filed by the Attorney General’s Office at the Superior Court yesterday.

The AGO lodged the charges as the CNMI government heightens its awareness campaign against domestic violence.

“We’re getting to be more aggressive in [prosecuting] those cases,” said CNMI chief prosecutor David Hutton.

In one of the three cases, Hutton charged 54-year-old Alicia I. Quitugua for allegedly stabbing her own son, Rodney Q. Reyes, with a knife. Hutton said the incident took place on Saipan last Monday, wounding the victim.

In another case, the prosecutor accused 25-year-old Frank E.M. Sablan of hacking his brother, Ronald M. Sablan (not the former Hotel Association president), with a machete, wounding the latter in the head.

The incident allegedly happened at their Koblerville home on Valentine’s Day after an altercation over taking turns in washing clothes.

Both Quitugua and Frank Sablan face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace in separate cases.

Meanwhile, Hutton also lodged criminal charges against 24-year-old Enrique F. Ilo for allegedly assaulting his wife on Saipan last Monday, despite a standing order from the court for him to prevent any contact with the woman.

The charges against Ilo include assault and battery, disturbing the peace, criminal contempt of court, and violating an order of protection.
