Hotel Nikko Saipan yesterday opened a new $700,000 reverse osmosis water treatment plant that will provide water for the hotel, Pau Pau Terrace Housing and the La Fiesta shopping complex.

Begun in June 2004, the project includes the complete renovation of the facility, dismantling and disposal of the old reverse osmosis machine, replacement of the piping system, drilling an additional deep well to complement the system, and upgrading of electrical wiring and panel.

The facility has two reverse osmosis machines with the capacity to produce a combined volume of 560 tons per day of potable water. This is equivalent to 146,880 gallons per day for both.

“Our facility is cutting edge technology and environment friendly and supplies potable water for the hotel needs, Pau Pau Terraces, and La Fiesta,” Hotel Nikko president Shinji Nakamura said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday.

Hotel Nikko management announced earlier that the new water system is more environment friendly, as it will eliminate all reverse osmosis brine discharges into the lagoon and will instead discharge all of the brine into underground injection wells.

Currently, the hotel mixes the brine with seawater and discharges it into a series of complex ponds and streams within the hotel property.

“Although the reverse osmosis brine is not considered a significant pollutant (when compared to storm water runoff and waste water discharges into the lagoon), the new system is expected to help improve lagoon water quality in the areas near the existing brine discharges,” the hotel management said.

Among those who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Gov. Juan N. Babauta, EFC Engineers and Architects president Efrain F. Camacho, and contractor Sanki Kogyo senior managing director Matsuru Motoki.
