The Tinian International Airport will be able to accommodate over 200 departing passengers at any given time, when the new terminal building is completed at the end of this year.

The current facility provides space for less than 150 arriving and departing passengers, according to Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director Carlos Salas.

Although the building’s architecture will be built similar to the existing terminal, the new building will be utilized mainly for departing passengers.

“Although it is not the only improvement left to be done, this new terminal facility is certainly an integral part of our overall plan to accommodate growth in Tinian’s tourism as soon as direct jet flights commence,” Salas said.

CPA is scheduled to break ground on Feb. 1 for the new departure terminal. On the same day, the ports authority will also issue an official Notice to Proceed to AIC Marianas Inc., the contractor of the project.

The design of the new terminal building was created by Honolulu-based Leo A. Daly Company.

The improvements will include a loading bridge for passenger use when embarking or disembarking from the jet aircraft, a connecting corridor to the old terminal building, and some new paved parking and vehicular access areas.

The total floor size is approximately 24,000 square feet, which provides also for concession areas, Transportation Security Administration security requirements, and enough room for immigration processing.

The project has a budget of around $2.6 million, funded by the Tinian Legislative Delegation’s capital improvement project funds plus $1 million in grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.

CPA said construction is expected to begin shortly and should be completed within 300 calendar days from Feb. 1.

Various other projects are being planned for the Tinian airport. These include the construction of a permanent aviation fuel facility, the strengthening of the parallel taxiway, and the completion of 8th Avenue.
