La Chai is out of ‘la’ playoffs
After sweeping the fifth-seeded X-Clusive team in consecutive games of the semifinal round of the Island Wide Slow Pitch Softball League on Friday night at the Oleai Sports Complex, the fate of the La Chai team was wrapped in a shroud of protest when the losing team took issue with La Chai’s improper uniforms.
The fog lifted yesterday afternoon, as the president of the Saipan Softball Association Robert A. Guerrero announced that La Chai is no longer competing in the postseason, but the hubbub about the team shirts wasn’t the only matter taken into consideration.
Guerrero requested that the particulars of the situation that led to the decision not be released to the public, but that the teams were fully aware of the reasoning, and that he was confident that the league took appropriate action.
As a result, X-Clusive went from the brink of elimination to a bout with the Eliminators, as the teams will duel for the trophy and bragging rights associated with winning the league championship.
League statistician Ray Palacios recalled that a similar situation occurred last year when the Eliminators advanced to the finals after they finished the regular season in second place—only to lose to the fifth-seeded What’s This Louie? in the championship.
“I don’t know if history will repeat itself, but it sure makes things more interesting,” said Palacios.
The one-night, best-of-three championship will begin tonight at the Oleai Sports Complex softball field, as the pennant runner-up Eliminators take on X-Clusive at 6:30pm. Game 2 will be played afterwards, following a brief rest period, and a deciding third game will ensue, if needed.
