Following complaints of overseas Filipino workers on their working conditions in South Korea, the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs has warned Filipino women against entering South Korea through arranged marriages or entertainment visas—a common means of human trafficking.

The DFA has reiterated that Filipino woman desiring to work in South Korea should:

* Strictly observe Philippine government procedures in seeking employment in South Korea;

* Be extra wary of, if not totally avoid, applying for arranged marriages to Koreans; and

* Be cautious in order not to fall prey to unscrupulous agents who offer Filipino women travel to Korea though marriage under the Korean Unification Church or through an E-6 or entertainer visa.

A number of Filipino women reportedly have illegally entered South Korea through the mail-order bride enterprises through marriages under the Unification Church known as “Moonies” after the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Korean founder of this religious sect; and more recently through the issuance of the E-6 entertainer visa for Filipino entertainers.

Enticed into marrying Korean men by the prospect of a better life in Korea, they only end up working in miserable conditions in bars and clubs.
