CoCo invites green warriors

The CNMI Organization for Conservation Outreach is encouraging people to attend its first public meeting tomorrow at the Garapan Elementary School cafeteria. The meeting is intended to inform the public about the group, its mission, goals and roles, as well as solicit input on environmental issues for the organization to address.
CoCo, a newly formed group, comprises representatives from various government agencies.
Coco said it will have quarterly meetings open to the public to discuss upcoming projects and other issues.
“This first meeting will give attendees a chance to learn more about how CoCo can help address their environmental concerns, as well as to discover how they might be able to assist and partner in addressing these problems,” the organization said.
Students who volunteer in CoCo projects will also earn credit toward fulfilling their volunteer hour requirements.
“CoCo works cooperatively on projects involving all areas of the environment from the summit to the sea, including litter and recycling, land habitat issues, coral reef degradation, and water quality,” the organization said. “Because CoCo is concerned with environmental issues on both land and sea, the group has chosen the coconut crab as its mascot because the adult coconut crab lives on land and lays its eggs in the sea. Also, the coconut crab is a widely recognized local icon.”
Coco’s first project featured assisting in America Recycles Day last year.
