New peace monument to be built at Banzai
A Japanese group will be constructing a new monument at the Banzai Cliff area, where members plan to hold a peace memorial ceremony every year.
In line with the project, the Marianas Public Lands Authority has designated a small portion of land in the area to the Marianas Visitors Authority, which is working with the Saipan Hosshoji Memorial Group.
“We support this project because it will help tourism to the Commonwealth. The historical ties between Japan and Saipan are one of the main reasons we are able to get Japanese tourists to visit our islands,” said MPLA chairwoman Ana Demapan-Castro.
In requesting the land designation, MVA managing director Vicky Benavente assured MPLA that the Department of Lands and Natural Resources has committed itself to assisting MVA in the project by taking responsibility over grounds maintenance and ensuring cleanliness at the future tourist site.
“The MVA is pleased that the SHMG has decided to construct a memorial monument here in Saipan. Such move will definitely generate additional visitors to the Northern Marianas annually, bringing additional benefits to the people of the CNMI,” Benavente said.
