House of Representatives chief legal counsel Jose A. Bermudes currently serves as the acting Legislative Bureau director pending the appointment of a permanent director.

Senate President Joaquin G. Adriano and House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial named Bermudes to the post in a Jan. 13, 2005 letter.

“Please be informed that we are appointing Jose A. Bermudes, the House chief legal counsel, as the acting director [of the bureau]. He is empowered to conduct all legislative bureau business in his acting capacity,” said the presiding officers.

The Bureau has lacked a director as bureau director Walter Macaranas’ employment contract expired last month.

The bureau deputy director, Plasido Tagabuel, had died last Wednesday.

House leadership spokesman Charles Reyes said the bureau needs to have a director at this time to accomplish various administrative work, including the issuance of employees’ payroll next week.

“There are transactions that must be made,” he said.

Reyes earlier said that the House leadership had signed the renewal contract of Macaranas but it remains pending at the Senate.

Sources said, however, said that the Senate president is rooting for somebody else.

Both presiding officers need to concur on the appointment of a bureau director.
