CNMI gets $98K for emergency food, shelter
The Commonwealth was recently awarded about $98,455 in federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the NMI.
A local board consisting of Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter, United Methodist Church, and other will determine how the funds would be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs operated by local service agencies in the area.
“The local board is responsible for recommending the agencies that would receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program,” a statement from the board said.
The Commonwealth’s selection to receive the funds was made by a national board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, consisting of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, and the United Way of America.
The board was tasked with distributing funds appropriated by U.S. Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in the high-need areas around the country.
Under the terms of the grant set forth by the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profit organizations or unit of the government; must have an accounting system; must practice nondiscrimination; must have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food or shelter programs; and, if a private voluntary organization, must have a voluntary board.
Previous organizations that were awarded funds through the program were Karidat, Saipan Mayor’s Office, and the Division of Youth Services under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
Qualifying agencies are urged to apply for the funds. Deadline for applications is Jan. 31, 2005.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for the funds must contact local board chair Lauri Ogumoro at 234-6981 or at the main office of Karidat in Chalan Kanoa.
