While its down to the final four games in the best-of-five finals for the players in the fall edition of the Saipan Major League, there is still a lot of time for them to shed some sweat on the training grounds of the Oleai Sports Complex in preparation of the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Having selected 23 of the finest hardballers in the CNMI, the organizing officials are wasting no time in readying the young talent for their trip next July.

Next Tuesday will be another step along the path to a strong showing in the Games, as all players and coaches will meet upon the familiar turf of Francisco M. Palacios field at 5pm.

The players are to be sure to bring their regular baseball gear and their running shoes, as their training for this year’s Games will include extensive work on the state of the art track and field facility and the weight room at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

“They’ll have to get used to running the track because they’ll be doing it for the next six months,” said team manager Tony Rogolifoi.

After this year’s squad met last week to determine their plan of action for their fundraising efforts, Jester Garcia, Matt Kintol, Jonathan Jones, Joe Guerrero, Jonathan Camacho, JP Flores, Byron Kaipat, Robert Bansil, Pat Alepuyo, Craig Sanchez, Greg F. Camacho, Tony Celis, Peter Tomokane, Joey Dela Cruz, AJ Allen, Tyrone Omar, Ben Jones, Jr., Jerome Delos Santos, Dwight Quitano, and Clifton Silil have been armed with $5 tickets for their hot lunch sale on Saturday, Jan. 22.

According to Rogolifoi, the team will not only sell the tickets for the lunches, but also cook them and deliver them as well. The group is going the extra mile because they need all of the help that they can get, as they need to raise $12,250 by Thursday, March 3, just to cover their transportation to the Games.

“Hopefully we can come up with the total cost of the airfare by then because that’s the biggest obstacle for us right now,” he said.
