2004 humanities journal now out
The 2004 issue of the Micronesian Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences has just been published and is now available.
Papers in the 2004 volume cover issues such as traditional taboo places on Lamotrek, the role of Filipinos in the early Spanish history of the Marianas, a discussion of post-colonial fiction in the Marianas, an appraisal of the context of the status negotiations, and much more.
“The journal has become established in the academic world,” said co-editor Sam McPhetres of the Northern Marianas College.
“Being published on the worldwide web means that we can make it available world-wide and do so for free of charge,” added co-editor Charles Prof Spennemann from Charles Stuart University in Australia.
This new volume now also features a new section “Micronesian Round-up.” Humanities Institutions in Micronesia are given the opportunity to summarize their activities during the preceding year. The 2004 issue contains contributions from the War in Pacific National park in Guam, the Micronesian Seminar in Pohnpei and two contributions from the Marshalls.
“There is much good research being carried out in Micronesia,” Spennemann said. “We’ve created ‘Micronesian Round-up” to make that more accessible. More such contributions are in the pipeline, and we’ll make it an annual event.
NMC staff are part of a team of academics editing and advising on the content of the journal, a flagship journal dedicated to the study of human thought, behavior, and culture in Micronesia.
As of 2005 the journal will be published on a biannual basis, with a Dry Season issue in May and a Rainy Season issue in November. Submissions of papers for review and contributions for ‘Micronesian Round-up’ are invited and welcome.
