While the top teams from across the island of Saipan were taking a mid-afternoon breather from the 3rd Annual Crime Stoppers Slow Pitch Softball Tournament, a few aspiring long-ball legends tapped the dirt off of their cleats, stepped into the batters box, and took their shots at becoming the homerun champion of the CNMI.

While many took their swings at the fences, a chosen few met with limited success, but only Joe Guerrero was able to emerge with a consistent level of power that landed him the title of the 2005 Homerun Derby Champion.

Guerrero faced some stiff competition from fellow No Ka Oi teammates Nick Castro and Tony Camacho, but the big man was able to continue sending moon shots out of the park, while his rivals faded into the midday sun.

In all, Guerrero sent nine balls out of the baseball field in the winner-take-all finals, while Camacho and Castro hit fewer than that when it counted the most.

Guerrero, Castro, and Camacho were the Top 3 finishers after two rounds.

While Guerrero took home $100 for taking the top spot in the players’ division contest on Saturday, Jan. 8, John Terlije represented the Joeten family of companies and won the event in the celebrity competition on Sunday, Jan. 9. Terlije’s lone homerun on his final attempt was good enough to win the celebrity derby, as none of the other well-known sluggers were able to knock the cover off of the ball in three rounds of competition. Terlije also took home a $100 prize for his conquest with the bat.
