Designated Drivers program a success
The Designated Drivers program under the Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention campaign was “a success” as no fatal traffic related accident was reported during its little over a month-long implementation, according to 3D committee chair Sgt. Sylvan Rangamar.
Rangamar explained that the program is the reason why no fatal accidents were reported, serving many during the weekends of the recent holiday season and providing transportation home.
The program, which began on Nov. 26, ended on Sunday night.
Individuals are urged to refrain engaging in impaired driving or to designate a sober driver.
Instead of driving home while intoxicated, individuals would call the Department of Public Safety and request a designated driver.
A police officer would be dispatched to the location of the caller to determine whether it would be safe for the designated driver to transport the caller.
The caller would sign a waiver and would be taken home, free of charge.
The program was created to save lives, not only of motorists who would normally drive while intoxicated, but also innocent motorists who abide by the law.
“The holiday season is a time to have fun and be happy, not to mourn over a lost loved one,” said 3D vice chair Rose T. Ada-Hocog during an earlier interview. (Shan Seman)
