Authorities yesterday destroyed over 300 cartons of cigarettes that were confiscated from incoming passengers at the Saipan International Airport.

According to Customs director John J. Santos, the seized items were destroyed at the government’s incinerator near the airport.

Santos said the law allows a passenger to bring into the CNMI only one carton of cigarettes if they do not conform with the Labeling Act.

That law requires each cigarette pack to contain the surgeon general’s warning on the potential health effects of smoking.

If the items conform with that law, passengers can bring in up to three cartons of cigarettes, according to Santos.
