Head Cutting competition at Kagman High
Head cutting is not what you think it is. This is an old form of dance competition started by black tap dancers as early as 1828 but modified in the early ‘20s and ‘30s. Head cutting allows a tap dancer to do a step and the challenger would have to imitate the step until a winner emerges. The winner will have to “cut the head” of the losers by performing a step or steps that an opponent cannot duplicate.
The Close Up Club and the seniors of Kagman High School will be sponsoring such a competition as the organizations’ fundraising project for their off-island trips to Washington and Micronesia. Entitled “Head Cutting – Bust a Move Saturday,” this is a dance-off competition to determine the best teenage dancer on Saipan, complemented by in-house music from local DJs.
Also, the school has lined up several other competitive activities such as “Rump Shaking,” another dance contest; “Trivia Night,” a Q&A competition about Micronesia; “Battle of the Bands,” a band competition; “Mystery Night,” a masquerade party; and other activities.
The dance will be from 7pm to 10pm and will also feature a live band called “The Tropic 3” composed of students from Kagman High.
The project intends “to provide teens a means of entertainment on the weekend that will be healthy” and to raise funds for the school’s educational activities.
