Department of Public Safety commissioner Santiago F. Tudela warned firearm users yesterday, saying that individuals caught firing shots on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day would be arrested.

“Authorities will arrest anyone who is caught misusing firearms,” he said. “The firearm would be confiscated and license may be suspended.”

Tudela said the warning is primarily for the safety of the public.

“All you’ve got to do is remember: Whatever goes up must come down, and it comes down faster,” he said.

DPS spokesman Eric F. David said that several individuals usually fire shots into the air at this time of the year, as part of their fireworks show.

He reminded the public that all firearm holders must have a valid license when in possession of a firearm. Also, firearms must not be loaded, and if traveling, must be locked in the trunk, or in a case and properly secured. Magazines must also be separated from the firearm, David said.

Meanwhile, Tudela also advised that kids playing with fireworks must have adult supervision. Authorities will confiscate fireworks from children lacking appropriate supervision.
