The holidays can be the coldest of seasons, particularly at night while strolling along Beach Road in late December and early January, when the chill bite of the cold air from Japan gets wafted to our neck of the woods in the Pacific. Grabbing a hot cup of coffee, cocoa or just plain tea can be the best way to fight the cold and what better way to ward off the chill than to stay at home and prepare a hot drink for your loved ones?

In its mission to enhance the “well-being and quality of life of the CNMI community through research and extension services,” the NMC Cooperative Research Extension Education Service shares what it believes to be one of the best recipes that the family will surely love: a taste of coffee, cocoa and cappuccino mix that will surely win your family members’ hearts.

These creamy, flavorful and sweet hot drinks are so easy to make and can be the best gifts for your friends and families this season.

Toffee Coffee Mix

1 cup instant coffee granules
2 cups dry milk powder
1 cup non-dairy coffee creamer
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butterscotch flavored pudding mix

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend to a fine powder. Place in air-tight jars, cover tightly and store in a cool, dark place. Use 2-3 spoonfuls of Toffee Coffee mix in a mug and add boiling water to fill up. Stir well and serve.

Instant Cocoa Mix

1 cup dry milk powder
1 cup non-dairy coffee creamer
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
Marshmallows (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend to a fine powder. Place in airtight jars. Combine 2 tablespoons of mix with 1 cup of boiling water. Stir well and serve.

Cappuccino Mix

1 cup instant coffee creamer
1 cup instant sweetened chocolate drink mix
2/3 cup instant coffee crystals
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend to a fine powder. Place in airtight jars, in a cool dark place. To serve, place 3 tablespoons of Cappuccino mix to 8 ounces of hot water and stir well to blend. Makes three cups dry mix. (Marconi Calindas)
