Literacy instruction in the Commonwealth received a boost this week, thanks to a donation made by Mobil Oil.

Cecile Bamba Suda, public relations and government affairs manager for Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Inc., presented a $1,500 check to board members of the Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities. These funds will be used to support the Motheread/Fatheread Literacy Program. The Humanities Council has been administering this program since 1998.

According to the council’s acting executive director, Scott Russell, Motheread teaches parents reading techniques through the use of children’s books. Parents in turn use these books to tell stories to their children, thus helping them learn about the world around them.

Russell said that books provide an effective means of communication between parents and children and can be used to improve academic skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing comprehension and critical thinking.

Suda said that Mobil Oil has four priority areas for donations: education, health, environment, and safety. She noted that this is the second year that Mobil has provided funds to the Humanities Council to support the Motheread program.

Russell praised Mobil Oil’s generosity and its commitment to fostering literacy in the islands. “This donation is very much appreciated and will be used to help ensure that the Motheread program continues to be available to families throughout the Commonwealth.”
