26th Annual Christmas Island Relay this Sunday
The Northern Mariana Islands Track and Field Federation recently announced that it would host another edition of the Christmas Island Relay.
According to NMITFF, the 26th Annual Christmas Island Relay will be held this Sunday, Dec. 26, beginning at the Pacific Islands Club’s southern most parking lot and concluding at the Last Command Post in Marpi.
The race, with a distance of 13.7 miles, requires teams of not more than five members, one of which must be a female or above the age of 50 or under 16 years.
Participants are encouraged to be at the PIC parking lot at 5:15am for registration and payment of a $25 fee per team. The race is scheduled to begin at 6am.
Each team must alternate runners every mile. The NMITFF would designate each mile switch off point throughout the race.
Also, each team is required to provide its own water supply, as well as a support vehicle that would pick up and transport team members to their next post.
Last year, the Saipan Runners-Cheeseburgers raced to victory and beat out 13 other teams with a time of 1:27.1. The team was comprised of seasoned sprinter Tony Ichiuo, Fred Camacho, Shimizu Masato, and Noriko Nasuharu.
Placing second was Too Fast Too Furious comprised of Yoshi Suzuki, Normanson Mobel, Marcan Aldan, Luke Nickerman, and Andi Attebury (1:33.1), while the Mwar Mwars clocked in with the third-best time (1:36.1). Team members included Monica Yamaguchi, Tamio Nishikido, Julie Sarich, Melissa Halaby, and Rennan Sublemente.
