High-flying skaters soar in Tinian skate camp
Tinian, CNMI—Decked in multi-colored skate gear, more than 40 students from 4th through 12th grade gathered at the Tinian Municipal Skate Park on Friday, Dec. 17, for the 2004 Zero Gravity Skate Camp.
Adrenaline-pumping music, cold drinks, and helpful volunteers made for the perfect skating environment for the children, who were just starting their winter vacation.
The children couldn’t wait to take off as they received instruction and skating tips from Jared Power, a native son of the island. The son of Don Power and his late wife, Connie, Jared had volunteered his time to be a skate camp mentor while home from school. Jared had also volunteered his expertise in the construction of the Municipal Skate Park in October 2003.
The day camp was coordinated by the Tinian Municipal Council and made possible by the voluntary efforts of the Tinian Youth Center and Office of the Mayor.
“The council is proud to continue to promote an exciting activity that keeps our youth out of trouble. And, seeing our skate park used and appreciated by all of these kids is a wonderful sight,” said municipal council chair Edwin P. Aldan.
The Mayor of Tinian, Hofschneider Enterprises, and Mendimelon Computer Services also helped make the camp a great success with their donations of skateboards to the youth center.
The municipal government of Tinian will also host the very first skate competition in the CNMI in February next year, and skaters from all over the CNMI are invited to join.
“Judging from the talent and enthusiasm the kids showed today, I’m sure that next year’s skate competition will be phenomenal,” said James M. Mendiola Jr., executive director of the 10th Tinian Municipal Council.
Skateboards and safety gear can be signed out at the Tinian Youth Center from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 6pm. The Youth Center staff will be glad to help assist with gearing up for the skateboard park. (Jaimie K. Sanchez-Barcinas)
