The Book Lovers Club of Chacha Ocean View Junior High School hosted a scholastic book sale Saturday morning at the Pedro Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

Almost 600 books were sold to the public, and funds generated from the sale would go directly to the club to fund upcoming activities.

“We did this for people on Saipan to buy books and also, they can use them for Christmas gifts for anyone,” said 14-year-old club treasurer Mark Dela Rosa.

Club advisor Joy Limes, who supervised the students at the sale, said Saturday’s activity as well as other activities by the club would promote literature.

“We hope that with this, we can promote literature to younger students. We have had activities where book club members go to the younger students in the community, the Head Start and elementary schools, to read stories aloud to them,” she said. “Hopefully that would bring out more literacy awareness in our community…that’s actually our goal.”

“Even in school, they encourage the rest of the student population to grab a book and read or become interested in reading,” she added.

Dela Rosa said one reason he is a member of the club is because promoting literature among peers and others would help others improve necessary skills.

“You improve your reading skills and writing and you know many stories,” he said.

Book Lovers Club was established within the 2002-2003 school year.

“We take care of all the literacy promotional activities for our school, and the functions that we have sponsored before is the scholastic book fair, celebrity reading, young authors book fair,” Limes said. (Shan Seman)
